Mergulho / SCUBA

Agora ainda falta o pára-quedismo :)

This Saint John’s weekend was different. Although I had some delays that made it quite difficult to go out to party it was a quite full day.
This time I went to Peniche to do scuba (self-contained underwater breathing aparator) diving. With me some went some other people which stand out those…. who went. :)
It was a packed day, it had bumpy boat trips to the Berlenga’s islands and afterwards the diving itself.
The location was quite nice and, even though the islands are somewhat poor regarding wild life. Well, to this matter we must exclude the seagulls that frequently gave us gifts from the heavens...
The diving’s weren’t very long, and we were accompanied all the time by an instructor. The rest of the guys used the time to snorkel while someone was diving.
At the end of the day we were all very tired but we had another activity done. Next is skydiving! :)

Treino Kendo Practice

After almost 3 months in the dry-docks I finally returned to practice Kendo. Those excellent, but somewhat problematic, holydays in the snow left some lasting impressions. But now, after some physiotherapy I’m training again.
Even though I’m not 100%, and there are still some movements that are troublesome, I feel very well to be at the dojo again. It was also very good to be with my “brothers in arms”, that fortunately were happy to see me again :)
Now I’m aiming to train a lot so that my leg stays completely operational and so that I improve my kendo. Oh and it’s possible that regarding kendo there are some news in the horizon. But I’ll write about that when the time comes.
So to all that helped: Domo Arigato!

Casamento 2 / Weeding 2

This last weekend I had another wedding. This time was Raquel and Nuno’s turn, argh Pedro’s, sorry :) You can say that we are having a wedding’s year. Everybody is tying the knot!! I have to say that I still don’t know why people do it. I still have time and when I understand why people do it maybe I’ll think about it.
Meanwhile when you answer the big question it’s always good to have those that are close to you, so there I was. The party was quite good and I was very happy for ne newlyweds. But how was there, was there and who wasn’t, wasn’t.
And by the way, the first night isn’t a myth after all!

Casamento Claudia Wedding

A sorte caiu à Cláudia.

This last weekend we had an unusual event (well at least among my friends), a wedding. The fortune pointed to Claudia. And let’s be honest, as she’s a year younger than me, it makes me quite shocked. Am I beyond my expiry date? :P eh eh. Anyway I had a lot of pleasure to be a part of the celebrations; the downside was the party being on a Sunday. As you might know as Monday is a work day all the happiness had to be contained.
Now all that’s left is to wish them well. And by now they’re on a tropical location enjoying beach and clear waters. Humpft!
Next week is Raquel’s turn. And as I mentioned before, I’m quite concerned!

Last Sunday we went and celebrated the birthday of the youngest girl of our group. Also known as Ana Manel (even though she doesn’t like the name), but that’s the way she’ll be known. Thanks to a very nice invitation there we went to the other side of the river to Ana’a mansion. But as it was Sunday and a workday for some the party itself was a little shortened, what didn’t mean it was less lively. We even had fruit with chocolate and a wonderful cake. The only downside was that not all of us could be present, namely Gaspar and Che.
But thanks a lot Ana for the party and hurray for our friends!!! And happy birthday!

Ps – Monday morning was a particularly difficult time to be lived…

Last weekend I went and rested a little. Just because daily rotine should be avoided at all costs. Eh eh! And as relaxing was the objective I went to Melgaço to enjoy some SPA treatments with some very nice company.
We got there and were very well welcomed. We even had a VIP treatment. You can easily say that it was the simplest way to fell in the rigth mood to relax.
As Friday was a short day, due to our late arrival, we didn’t do much. On the other hand Saturday there was time to do lots of things. We saw the fair, that just happened to be that weekend, visited the ruins. Well sitghseeded a lot, but as there was still a lot to do we returned to the hotel. There we enjoyed some very nice massages! The first analogy I can think of is that they turned us into a giant candy, at least in the wrapping sense. Also, as the pool was just there we spent the rest of the afternoon in the jacuzzi and in the water.
But bedtime was upon us and as the warrior needs its rest there we went for a little nap. As always Sunday came in a flash. So we packed and went for a small trip to Spain (hurray for gasoline at less 30cents). And as the day was flowing we returned home and another weekend had passed.

Fisioterapia / physiotherapy

Well now after the snow accident, and after the trips to the doctor, I’m doing physiotherapy. All in all it will be 3 weeks of work to get operational again. Therefore I can resume my practice and other physical activity.
There are many treatments and the difficulty is rising, but they’re becoming harder which is ok if I can be 100% soon. After all it’s been 2 months since the incident.
The rest seams to be as usual. Lot’s of work and not much time to rest. So let’s get to work that I’m almost well! :)

Olhos novos / New Eyes

Besides some other problems, namely my leg. Not everything has been bad. Even though I’ve been using glasses for quite some time I thought enough was enough. Therefore I took care of finding a solution. I went to the doctor and because it was possible I scheduled a surgery to resolve the problem. The solution has a name Photorefractive keratectomy. It’s quite the big name. Deep down what it means is that they cut my eyes, burned them and putted them back as they were.
Well, now I left the glasses behind and life’s looking differently. At least it’s strange waking up and not having to put anything on my face. Anyway I’ll get used to it. After all it was a change to the best. Now I’m recuperating and eventually I’ll be as new. So from now on I’ll have a new look, to be more precise, without glasses. :)
Well and if you’ll want to know more about the surgery you can read it here.

Perna / Leg

Ultimamente não tenho ido ao treino. E pode-se perguntar porquê. Lembram-se da minha viagem à neve? E daquele meu pequeno incidente?

Lately I haven’t been doing practice. You can ask why. Do you remember my snow trip? And mine little incident? Well, I’ve been in the dockyard, without any practice or even moving that much. After some trips to the doctor I had to do a MRI to the leg.
25 minutes and lots of images after I was ready. But how ever though of doing those exams with those green clothes? Well if you watch house M.D. it’s really tight and noisy.
Well after another appointment to the doctor I fortunately found out that I don’t have any muscles busted, and not bones fractured. So the only thing that’s left is to do some physio to get this leg rolling. I should have 6 intensive, but that can only be confirmed after the trip to the physiotherapist.

Baqueira 2007

Although the delay I have to keep the world updated. Therefore I have to say that on the week of March 12th I went to the snow. Specifically to Baqueira. The usual suspects gathered and together we rented a mini-bus.

After an 11h trip we finally got there, but really tired. We took care of the apartments (which were rather spacious…) and rested a little. Well, not all of us, some since day one thought that the Xbox is more important :)

The week was rather good. We didn’t have that much snow. It was enough for us to ski most of the resort. Susana, being a rookie in these matters, was quite scared a start. But by the end of the week she was all: when do we come back?

During the last days I even had the change of trying out mini-skis. That due to the reduced size and lack of breaking capabilities tends to be faster than usual.

A comment that started to be eared, due to the long days, was: when do we get back to our jobs? That’s what you get when days start at 8h/9h and finished at 17h. It was a lot of exercise.

The only problem was what happened to me on Friday. At a time I was stopped waiting for more people I slipped backwards and busted my knee. There I went on the stretcher and onto the medical center, x-rays and a I ended up with a iron-on-each-side-of-the-knee solution. But about that I’ll write later.

To sum up Sergio fractured the radium and To Ze had a rupture of the knee muscles. All in all it was a handicapped trip.

PS – Never ear what Tiago says!

Trabalho / Work

And as was told yesterday I spend a loto f time at work. And as such I should show those that spend a lot of time with me. Therefore here are some references to the people in question. That is Paulo, Isabel, João, Sofia and Paupério. All healthy and without any trace of madness, more or less. :)

Arigato gozaimashita

This last weekend I went with my Kendo friends to Lisbon. All of this because it was there that took place the 3rd Ariga Sensei Seminar. It was, lacking other words, 2 very intense days. Specially the 15 hours of practice.

We got there last Friday late in the day. So we didn’t manage to get much sleep because the seminar started early in the morning. During the practice we had not only the presence of Ariga Sensei but also Ito Sensei (chief trainer for Tokyo Police) and Ducarme Sensei (president of the European Kendo federation).

So all in all we had quite some “heavy” personalities, making it a very productive weekend.

But the biggest surprise wasn’t that. Having enough senseis present, and having permission from the European Kendo federation (thanks to the presence of the president) they made us a surprise. We had the opportunity to do graduation exams. I was only expecting then in April, during the European championship. So I was a little caught of gard.

Even so we studied all we needed and Sunday, when the exam took place, we showed what we have been doing. After the two part exam the results were out, and instantly I had a smile from ear to ear.

I’d passed. Now I’m shodan (the first dan, I think you spell it like that). For non knowers it’s the first black belt. Of course I still don’t know a lot of kendo, but now the important thing it to practice for nidan (second dan). Because moving forward it’s what’s important.

So for all that helped to my “victory”: Arigato gozaimashita!

Poema / Poem

As mocinhas desta terra
Deixam a gente quente

1 Copinho de licor
2 Copinhos de licor
Levas com a cadeira nos cornos
Passa-te já o calor

Today I had a poem that pleased me quite a lot. Unfortunately translating it would take the fun out of it. But bear in mind that is just about drinking and women that make us “warm” :)

conduzir / driving

Ora hoje tive 2 exemplos que me deixam chocado.

O outro exemplo é o verdadeiro oposto.

Because of the work during the week and rest during the weekend I haven’t had much time to write here. Even so, and due to the events that occurred today, I think I had to write something.

Today I’ll wonder a little over driving. I drive for some time now (6 years now that I think of it), and I think I kind of manage to do it well. I0m careful and decided and on the road I don’t see myself as a danger to society. Having that in mind today I had 2 examples that chocked me.

One of them is the smarty driver. I was doing a roundabout, going on the inside and I signaled and started going to the outside (as the law demands). Well on the entrance just before the exit I was going to take 2 “smart” drivers decided they had to get in. One of them broke just a few centimeters from me. The second one, wasn’t my swift brake, would be with a more stylish car. My point is, is it worth, specially inside a city always with the start/stop routine, driving as a formula 1 driver? At the end of the day one gains 24 seconds? Wouldn’t it be best to drive calmly, arrive at the destination at the same time and not killing anyone?

The other example was quite the opposite, one about those people without much ability to drive. I was waiting to park and watched 2 women trying for 7 minutes to take their car from were it was parked. After that time they gave up and ask me to take it out (it’s quite the act of desperation asking a stranger to take your car out). Well when I was starting the maneuvers the other car that was making it difficult went away. Nevertheless, the woman was for 2 times 3mm away from bumping into nearby cars.

After these 2 episodes, and having in mind that I’m not a top notch driver, I reaffirmed my position that having a driving license should be a more refined process. There should be psychological tests to see if people wouldn’t become “animals” while driving. Also there should be some type of supervision during the driver lifetime. All in a prevention and not correction point of view.

But it’s possible I’m wondering without a goal, but it’s also possible that someone agrees with me.

resultado / result

After so long without writing anything on this blog, a blog that’s with me for so long I really deserve some punishment.

Even so, lately things have been somewhat complicated. I had quite the software development here at work. It was the biggest and most complicated that I ever did here at the company. And after these last stressful weeks I finally managed to get things done.

Now after this marathon I’m quite relieved. I had quite the weight on my shoulders. And now that it’s gone I can finally breathe.

I even have an analogy, but thanks to a conversation I once had with Ze Manel, but I’ll keep it to myself.

Now I have some new developments ahead of my, but for now I can rest a little to catch my breath.
